Each winter the club runs a Snowcraft instruction programme.  This year it consists of three weekends at Mount Ruapehu and a weeknight evening session prior to each weekend trip.   It starts with Snowcraft 1 (SC1) which is for beginners and those wanting confidence for tramping and basic safety in snow conditions.   Snowcraft 2 (SC2) includes basic rope work and anchors for alpine tramping and climbing.  Snowcraft 3 (SC3) includes more advanced skills for mountaineering.  Each level (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for the next.  The weeknight sessions are an integral part of the programme and attendance is compulsory.  Combined, a good introduction to climbing on snow is presented.  Trainees in groups of 2-4 will team up with club instructors for tuition.

Dates are as follows:

Snowcraft 1: 29 & 30 June, Mt Ruapehu (evening intro and briefing Wed 26 Jun)
Snowcraft 2: 13 & 14 July, Mt Ruapehu (evening briefing and intro rope work Wed 10 July)
Snowcraft 3: 27 & 28 July, Mt Ruapehu (evening briefing and rope work Wed 24 July)

N.B. We will spend full days on the mountain if conditions are suitable but time on the mountain may be curtailed due to poor weather or avalanche conditions.  If conditions are unsuitable for the full weekend the course may be postponed to the following weekend. The length of courses may be shortened due to postponements e.g. SC2 and SC3 could be combined into one weekend.  We aim to spend at least three days on the mountain.
